Featured WikiPage: Discovering the OpenRoad.tv with the help of a YouTube video

Filed under: Featured Wiki Page — Tak

Today’s featured WikiPage does something we think is great — they’ve added a YouTube video which helps explain what their website does. OpenRoad.tv is an internet startup offering stories and recommendations for travels and journeys in the American West (including Alaska and Hawaii); with video segments from a seasoned journalist who hosts the Bay Area Backroads travel show for KRON television in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to produced video segments, OpenRoad.tv provides visitors the ability to add their own stories and travel recommendations and join discussion groups filled if other interested in “following the open road.”

If you’d like to add you own YouTube videos to a WikiPage, check out the AboutUsVideoSupport page for easy to follow instructions. (View Comments)

Q&A with BryanDaugherty of Stackzilla.com

Note: BryanDaugherty recently found AboutUs and is now an Active Community Member. Bryan was nice enough to answer a few questions about his experiences at AboutUs.

1. What did you think of AboutUs when you first came here, and how has that changed as you started making edits and then really became an ActiveMember over the last few weeks?

I had never edited a wiki before and it seemed very intimidating. My first few edits were just updates to the information already listed (on Stackzilla.com/Evolution of Thought Institute) as this was the easiest to understand and do. I also examined other domain pages listed on AboutUs that I was familiar with and noticed the great possibilities that wiki and AboutUs had to offer. I was not sure whether investing the time into learning wiki would improve the traffic to my site, but felt that it could not hurt to learn to make more productive edits. Through many of the help features and some pointers from the courteous staff, I began to understand that editing was much more simple then previously thought. These initial edits helped introduce me to the wiki way which I found sincere and extremely productive. Not only were the edits I made increasing the traffic to Stackzilla.com but I thoroughly enjoyed the concept and ideals of participating in the AboutUs community. Reflecting back, I now consider some of my first edits “selfish” in comparison to all the work I witnessed by other active members and staff.

I began participating by taking stock in other members passions such as flagging adult content and welcoming. These first steps were rewarding because I was doing something that would make a difference outside of my own self-seeking interests. I also discovered that being a builder of portals and articles was very fulfilling and even helped introduce me to other individuals who shared the passions I enjoyed.

2. Now that you’ve built a few different WikiPages (from Stackzilla.com to your own PersonalPage, among others), what experiences do you have to share with others? (For example, what works, what doesn’t, tricks/tips, etc.)

The best advice I have received regarding editing pages at AboutUs still guides me to this day. Ted Ernst explained to me that no matter what edit I made, it would not break or harm anything and any edit can be reverted back to its original state. With this understanding in mind I felt more comfortable editing various pages in a constructive manner. As for what works, I suggest taking a look at some of the featured pages that are listed and familiarizing yourself with how these pages are set up. Here are a few things I try to keep in mind:

  • What is the information you are trying to get across to those who may visit the page.
  • Does the page seem to be in order and allow the reader to follow the thoughts you are expressing.
  • Are there any red links on the page, if so, are they something of importance and something that will be edited/added in the future.
  • If it is a domain page, have you added a logo, services, product pictures, testimonials and unique features of the domain.
  • Have you added the correct categories to the page.

I think it is important to add that there is no one way to edit a page, each can be effectively unique and express the individualism of the domain or editor. Just try out different things to see what works best for you. Originality is key to attraction.

3. And now that you’ve taken an active role in the AboutUs community, helping with the FeaturePotentials, welcoming people and a number of other projects, what encouraged you to do this and, how do you like it?

Taking an excerpt from AboutUs that I have found genuine and indisputable (as well as unable to express better myself),

Wikis are vibrant, fluid spaces that foster a distinct culture of Transparency. AboutUs strives to create a dynamic community of self-organizing members building the Commons by contributing Constructive Edits

Considering the significance of the statement, there wasn’t much need for more encouragement. I have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming new users and meeting new people on AboutUs. I have met some of the most extraordinary people who have very distinct and valuable passions. There is no limit to what can be accomplished when you are surrounded by individuals who care about what you are trying to accomplish. To me, AboutUs can be defined by much more then its core values, but by the people who actually uphold these values as truths and practice them daily.

For more information about Bryan Daugherty check out his Personal Page and the DomainPage for his website, Stackzilla.com/Evolution of Thought Institute. Among the WikiPages he’s worked on are: Portal:Entrepreneur Education, My Cluster Page and articles such as The State Of Security In America.

Featured WikiPage: Photos a benefit for describing unique products

Filed under: Featured Wiki Page — Tak

Sometimes there’s just no way to say it — when descriptions fail, often a photo can help get the point across. Take the product listings for BMCFlexpar.com for example. This company manufactures and sells mudguards, among other things. “What’s a mudguard,” you might ask? Take a look at the photo. “Oh,” you say, “That’s a mudguard. Those things to protect commercial rigs from mud.” Well, thanks to a good set of photos, the BMCFlexpar.com page is a long ways towards telling visitors that this company offers a variety of types of mudguards — galvanized sheet plate, rubber, stainless steel and rubber, and in a thermo-plastic. Additionally, they produce tool boxes, fire extinguisher boxes and more, all of which can been seen in pictorial form, right on the BMCFlexpar.com WikiPage. Now that’s pretty handy. (View Comments)

Featured WikiPage: A fusion of e-commerce and wiki for emeralds and emerald information

Filed under: Featured Wiki Page — Tak

At AboutUs, we love to see interesting combinations of Web 2.0 technology. One that’s been becoming more and more popular is websites that merge a wiki with their e-commerce sales. Naturally, when we see a company using a wiki to add value to their customer’s experiences and knowledge we just can’t help but get a little excited. The website for EmbassyEmeralds.com, is one such resource. Specializing in online loose emerald and emerald jewelry, this dealer of Colombian emeralds also hosts The Emerald Encyclopedia, a TikiWiki installation containing dozens of articles related to emeralds, from history, mythology, science, and technology to buying advice. She’s Geeky: A Women’s Tech (un)Conference

Filed under: Featured Wiki Page — MarkDilley and TakKendrick

Creating space for women in male dominated arenas of life is a good trend, especially for geeks. Geeks are different, and the geeky world is sometimes a lonely world. Geeks look around themselves in the world and see lots of people not-like-them. Female geeks often feel this even more acutely. They look around themselves in the workplace and professional events and see lots of people not-like-them. Which is one reason why the upcoming She’s Geeky is great. She’s Geeky is an opportunity for women across different areas of technology to connect, to present ideas (just show up and present!), exchange skills, swap visions, and build community.

From AboutUs friend Kaliya Hamlin:

She’s Geeky (http://www.shesgeeky.org) - A Women’s Tech (un)conference on October 22-23 in Mountain View, CA.
This event is designed to bring together women from a range of technology-focused disciplines who self identify as geeky. Our goal is to support skill exchange and learning between women working in diverse fields and to create a space for networking and to talk about issues faced by women in technology. ( more details regarding Kalyia’s motivations and hopes.)

As with any unconference (which are solidly based in Open Space Technology), no one has prior knowledge of what topics will be actually be proposed by attendees, but here are some topics that may be proposed. This give unconferences the feel of the coffee break session common at most regular conferences (where often the most interesting discussion and activities is created). Some of the highlights for us are: open source collaboration styles and how that works or doesn’t for women, balancing work/life, technology for social-purpose goals, technology usability, hardware hacks, small-scale projects using software engineering techniques.

We personally know and respect (read: think is awesome!) Kaliya’s work (she co-facilitated the most recent Portland RecentChangesCamp with one of us), and there are many more fantastic people organizing this: Mary Hodder, founder Dabble.com; Julia French, Covered Communication; Susan Mernitt, Yahoo; Sylvia Paull, Berkeley Ventures; heathervescent, Purple Tornado; Danese Cooper, Intel; Laurie Rae; Deb Roby a BlogHer blogger; and Melanie Swan, and many more awesome people already signed up.

Featured WikiPage: The Very Model of a Modern Major WikiPage (apologies to Gilbert and Sullivan)

Filed under: Featured Wiki Page — Tak

The page for ScaleModel.net offers great information on their website for scale model enthusiasts. Beyond being a (pardon the pun) model WikiPage (complete with some great photos of scale models), the history and site description for ScaleModel.net make this a very interesting website. Kept and maintained as an international list of websites related to scale models, ScaleModel.net provides an approach to maintaining their list that is much in line with some of TheWikiWay philosophies, allowing modelers from around the world to add their website to the list, online and free. The contents of the ScaleModel.net website are then intended to be freely shared by everyone. The success of this approach has allowed for the ScaleModel.net resource to contain over 7,800 sites listed, with an impressive 15,000 page views per day. (View Comments)

Featured WikiPage: A one-of-a-kind WikiPage for company providing one-of-a-kind Tibetan rugs

Filed under: Featured Wiki Page — Tak

Some WikiPages just have it all. A good balance of information and photos along with well defined sections make for nearly perfect statements about a company or website. One of the more impressive WikiPages we’ve seen lately is the one for InnerAsiaRugs.com, a company producing one-of-a-kind handmade Tibetan rugs. Packed with information along with company history and philosophy statements as well as great product images, the InnerAsiaRugs.com page elevates the WikiPage format into a unique resource for their company. AboutUs Stakeholders Meeting wrap up

As mentioned a couple of days ago, yesterday was the 3rd Quarter AboutUs Stakeholder Meeting, an opportunity for investors, AboutUs staff, community members and other people who have “a stake” in the direction of the company and the wiki to get an update of what progress, challenges and initiatives AboutUs has undertook in the past three months.Held at the Portland office, the meeting was also broadcast live via a Ustream.tv video feed, with audio provided via a conference call and questions from community members from around the globe being asked via our IRC channel.

Among the topics discussed

  • The objectives accomplished over the last quarter, including: building AboutUs staff in two continents; the new Portland office for the main headquarters of AboutUs; and the creation and adoption of the new AboutUsLogo and NewSkin.
  • The identification of three primary long-term goals for AboutUs as both a company and a wiki: become a top 10 website; develop a great brand for AboutUs; and encourage a great place to work.
  • Additional conversations/reports included: the indentification of user engagement as a priority for AboutUs; discussion of how we plan to engaging participation from visitors to the website and encouraging them to become regular contributors, active community members and volunteers; discussion about our traffic numbers and their ramifications; opportunities and experiments for exploring the SEO impact of WikiPages on AboutUs as they relate to Google and other search engine “hits”; and discussion of the revenue models for the company’s long-term plans.

For more complete recap of the meeting’s discussion, you can view the Notes from the Meeting, watch the video (the password is “wiki”), or read through the IRC Chat Summary.

Featured Wiki Pages: Some cool WikiPages for Web 2.0 projects

Filed under: Featured Wiki Page — Tak

The collaboration and sharing between users that’s a strong component of the Web 2.0 movement is something we just love to champion at AboutUs. As WikiPages on other internet projects are edited and grown here, we present an interesting synergy: one Web 2.0 company with comments and information on others:

The latest Web 2.0 property on the scene (which went live today) is Goboz.com, a local search site with the ever-popular voting system (registration free) allowing users to share information on restaurants, bars, shopping, health and beauty, professional services and more. Currently, Goboz.com has information on Portland, Oregon, but they plan expand to Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area by the end of the year with more locations planned for next year. (View Comments)

Another local online search service to build a great AboutUs WikiPage is UrateLocal.com. This site features business reviews, currently focusing on the Los Angeles, New York City, Toronto and Kitchener areas. (View Comments)

And here’s another local review site with a slightly different focus: LastRounds.co.uk. The Last Rounds Project provides a pub review of London with the kinds of information often left out of reviews: opening and closing times of the venue, addresses, maps, information on local bus, train and tram service, local taxi cab information, and even the locations and hours of public toilets.
