Answering the phones at AboutUs

by KristinaWeis on 22 August 2008

AboutUs is (as far as we know) the only wiki to have an 800 number, and I am one of the people that answers the phone here in Portland. The calls are typically from people wanting to learn more about promoting their website with a Deluxe AboutUs Article, asking questions about what AboutUs is or how to edit.

But sometimes it is someone calling trying to reach another website. Sometimes they’re confused, but oftentimes they gave up trying to find contact information on the website itself and decided to go looking elsewhere by doing a search for the domain name/website. That often brings them to our page about that website as we are often the second or third result when you search for a domain name on Google, and there’s our not so hidden contact us link down at the bottom with—low and behold!—a toll-free phone number. From there I do my best to find them some way to contact the website they’re looking for while telling them a bit about AboutUs.

Besides helping people, my favorite part of answering the phone is that one page at a time I can hone in on AboutUs pages that are lacking a piece of information that at least one of their viewers was looking for. So after I’ve found someone a phone number or email address I edit the page to add that information and maybe give the page a once over. This is my “one thing”.

If you have a question regarding AboutUs.org feel free to contact us or give us a ring at 1.800.AboutUs.
