AboutUs’ PageRank is showing again!

by KristinaWeis on 10 November 2008

Due to an inscrutable error, Google PageRank failed to properly show up for most people on most AboutUs pages for the past several months… until yesterday. Last night I logged in to check my watchlist and was oh-so-pleasantly surprised to see that the PageRank of our pages was miraculously showing again in my PageRank toolbar without a glitch.

When Google updated PageRank this past July, it appeared that virtually every page besides our home page had lost its PageRank because our PageRank toolbars were suddenly showing our pages as “unranked”. (In actuality our pages had gained PageRank, but we didn’t know that yet.)

Thanks to Corey, we discovered that the problem was actually a product of our CamelCase capitalization system. For one reason or another, any page with a capital letter in its URL (roughly 99.9% of our pages) would not register PageRank and our few URLs without capitals (like our home page and the magnify360.com page) would.

During this time the only way to check the PageRank of a page on AboutUs.org was to go to a PageRank checker like PageRank.net or PRChecker.info and check the lowercase version of the URL (e.g. changing http://www.aboutus.org/AboutUs.org to /aboutus.org), and then it would show its PageRank just fine. And it seems that even though the toolbars are now working to show AboutUs’ PageRank, when you go to a PageRank checking website and enter in an AboutUs.org URL it still must be made lowercase to correctly show the PageRank.

We’re still uncertain why our PageRank went from completely visible before July to nearly invisible and then back to mostly visible yesterday, but we’re happy to have it back!

I’m new to eCommerce, and page ranking is still a mystery to me. If anyone has more helpful experiences, please send to me.

Hi Daws. Don’t worry – anyone who says that PageRank isn’t at least partially a mystery to them is lying. Google explains PageRank a bit more at http://www.google.com/corporate/tech.html.

And also, I encourage you to edit the http://www.aboutus.org/ShepherdMtnPet.com page about your site here on AboutUs.org.

Hi Daws,

I agree totally with Krista. Page Rank / Linking and Indexing can be a complex environment when it comes to ecommerce. If your pages are dynamically produced from a database then to get them indexed you need permanent linking to them. In other words you can’t have a field which you have to manually input a variable to retrieve a result. This can be overcome by using a drop down menu as long as it is not javascript.

Cheers,

Mick

I would like to make contact with the individuals named and shown with their MV’s, why?, because I own one and would like to talk to them about owning this rare MV vehicle! The article was in the MV Magazine December 2008 issue pqge 98. Please acknowledge.

Thank You

I am sorry for not identifiying the MV in my request but it was the small Army amphibious jeep or the Command car. I believe Ford Motor Company manufatured 2000 of these units. Any way the one that I own is a Ford Product.

Hi Jerome, we are AboutUs.org, a website about websites. Which organization are you trying to reach?
