This time of year, we all get a little list obsessed. From Time’s Top People of the Year to Google’s Zeitgeist list to a certain jolly elf’s list up at the North Pole, the year end is always a great time to recap.
Adding to our list
Our AboutUs Facebook Group just celebrated it’s own list milestone, welcoming our 200th fan!
Congrats to our 200th fan Brent Hieggelke, and if you’re on Facebook and aren’t “on our list” be sure to sign-up as a fan of AboutUs – it’s a great way to show your support as well as for us to keep you updated with news and events.
We at AboutUs are pretty into the spirit of lists too. We think they can create a wonderful way of showing inherent folksonomy as people present popularity through a variety of metrics, whether it’s search, tagging or some other user person-generated taxonomy. With that in mind, we found a few lists over the past couple of weeks that made us (as wiki-enthusiasts) beam with pride.
Delicious Top 10 Searches
We first noticed this list earlier today when ReadWriteWeb posted their thoughts which rightly notes that Delicious’ Top 10 Searches 2008 (news, restaurants, etc) aren’t necessarily pointing to the best results for what searchers are looking for. In the case of their #4 search “wiki“, the results tend to be more encouraging, showing a variety of the top wiki platforms and websites. (AboutUs.org appears at #36 on that list.)
Google Zeitgeist Fastest Rising
Google puts out it’s own “Zeitgeist list” which tracks the most popular and rising search terms on their site — providing an interesting glimpse in to the memorable moments and emerging trends in 2008, as voted by popular search. While the term “wiki” didn’t make the U.S. list (because it’s steadily becoming part of the lexicon here), we were impressed by how often “wiki” did show up in the “fastest rising” terms for many individual countries, showing up in the top ten in Australia, Finland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland, Singapore, and Sweden.
ReadWriteWeb Top 10 Enterprise Web Products
We’re also pretty pleased to see two different wiki engines showing up on ReadWriteWeb’s list of Top 10 Enterprise Web Products. As they put it in their description, “We are seeing major wiki adoption in the enterprise.” (Of course, on Monday we presented our arguments for using AboutUs as a public enterprise wiki, but that didn’t enter into the scope of the ReadWriteWeb list.)
Alexa Ranking
Probably the best metric for a website’s popularity is the daily Alexa Traffic Ranking. As AboutUs’ Alexa Ranking continually bobs around the top 1000 most popular websites in the world, it’s also important to note we’ve long held top 1000 popularity in over 10 different countries, including the United States (#708 as of today), Canada (#840 today), United Kingdom (#754 today), Germany (#764 today), and India (#449 today).
