Some SEO changes (for AboutUs and you!)

by KristinaWeis on 22 December 2008

Recently we made two changes to help the PageRank and SEO (search engine optimization) of AboutUs.org as well as the people promoting their sites here.

First, we discovered that AboutUs technically had two homepages.  We had the standard http://www.aboutus.org (that’s how most people link to us) as well as http://www.aboutus.org/Wiki (which is where our internal “AboutUs Home” links pointed to). The tell-tale sign that this was a problem was that the first of our homepages had a PageRank of 6 and the latter 5.  Ted and Kristina learned that this was a problem to fix while watching another website be reviewed at an SEMpdx hot seat.  The solution was to merge the two homepages with a 301 redirect.

Secondly we “no followed” some of the links in our skin, such as our privacy policy and contact page links at the bottom of AboutUs.org.

Previously we had been passing PageRank internally to some pages that didn’t need it, thus diluting the PageRank we were passing to ones that could really use it: Recent Changes, SpotlightArticles and AboutUs Home for example.

We’re not certain what the visible results of these changes will be, but it certainly can’t hurt and we hope that they will benefit the people using AboutUs to promote their websites.

Way to go! Great job attending to the important details. Thanks for explaining, too.
