Five Simple Ways to Improve an AboutUs Page: Part III

by Steven Walling on 11 March 2009

Parts I and II of the five ways to improve an AboutUs page that we’ve outlined so far gave you some steps to take without having to do any wiki editing. Now, we’ll show you one important thing you can do when diving in to the wiki portion of our pages for the first time.

Part III: Write a Custom Description

Every AboutUs page comes ready-made with a Title and Description section, courtesy our bot. What you might not know is that we love it when you delete these and replace them with something original.

AboutUs pages are more effective for readers and for SEO if you have a description that is original to the page, rather than an excerpt of your site. Even just a paragraph is a step in the right direction. In almost every page our WikiEditors touch, they remove these sections and write a new description.

It won't bite, I promise.

It won't bite, I promise.

Now, we understand that being bold is a part of The Wiki Way of working that’s new to most folks, but remember that you can’t break a wiki page, and you can always undo any change you’re not happy with. Wiki pages are more free form than you may be used to, but removing and re-titling sections in order to add fresh content is most definitely welcome on AboutUs.

So how are you going to get yourself a new description? First things first, you need to go ahead and click the “edit wiki” button underneath your Topics, which has a History button to the right of it. After the page reloads, you’ll see the edit mode of an AboutUs page. (See the screenshot on the left.)

Once you’ve deleted the sections titled Title and Description, just add your own paragraph or two describing the basics of your website and organization. Be sure to add a new section header by placing a pair of equal signs around the title of your choice. (See the screenshot on the right.)

Now that you’ve got some original descriptive content in your wiki page, you can go wild with any additional style formatting if you wish. But even if just save your new description as is, you’ve completed a vital step in making your AboutUs page a place that’s valuable to your audience and helpful for your site’s SEO. Tomorrow, I’ll be talking about how and why to add WikiLinks.
