WikiWednesday recap – Wikipedia for Journalists and Bloggers

in Community, Did You Know?

Once again, AboutUs was lucky to host another WikiWednesday, the monthly gathering for discussion about wikis of all kinds. This time, we focused in particular on Wikipedia as a research tool for journalists and bloggers, and there was a diverse group attending.

We started with a presentation I knocked up to introduce some of the ideas we wanted to explore, in preparation for what turned out to be a really productive panel including both Wikipedians from WikiProject Oregon (Steven Walling and Pete Forsyth) and skilled, experienced local journalists (Abraham Hyatt and Dan Cook). If you’re inclined, here are the slides, wish we’d recorded the panel’s audio.

This gathering was in a way a continuation of the sessions about the future of journalism in a digital world that occurred at BarCamp Portland the preceding weekend. I think the level of discourse definitely owes a debt of gratitude to the conversations that set the stage on this topic.

It was also a lead-in to the digital journalism camp planned for August, and the fact that Pete will be appearing on OPB’s Think Out Loud radio program representing WikiProject Oregon. For AboutUs, we really enjoy providing a space to facilitate the growing dialogue about the future of journalism and wikis.
