WikiTip: Linking

by KristinaWeis on 29 July 2009

As a part of our sporadic WikiTips series… linking!

One of the fundamental ideas of wiki is its ability for easy and rich linking between pages.

To link from one page on AboutUs.org (and MediaWiki wikis in general) you place the name of the page (which is also the part of the URL after the /) in double brackets. For example, if I want to link to AboutUs’ page about Google.com from a page I’m editing I just add Google.com. Then, if I want to get tricky I can also make the link display a description by doing this: Google. Here the link will say Google, but will link to http://AboutUs.org/Google.com properly.

For more information and instructions see our page about WikiLinking.

You can also:

 • Link from a wiki page to another site. To do this format you link like AboutUs Weblog.  See our Linking Guide for proper usage.
 • Link from a page on AboutUs.org to a page on many other wikis via an “InterWiki” link.  Example: Wikipedia's article about AboutUs.org.  To find the link prefix for a wiki see our InterWikiMap.

Note: On most AboutUs pages linking (and other wiki markup) can be done in any section, but on pages created by our new bot the only section that currently allows for wiki text is the “wiki” section.

I remember using a CASE tool called Objectory… it was written in Smalltalk and eveything in the environment was an object. So instead of typing a lot of random text and then creating links from some of the strings, one choose keywords from a library of preexisting objects and inserted them in the flow of words.
Perhaps a future Wiki will use something like Google Wave to suggest to us possible links as we are typing away. It’s search could be constrained to the domain of the wiki, the domain of the enterprise, or open to the web.

Wikipedia does not allow self promotion. The best way to get information about yourself there, is to make a case for it on the talk page of an existing, relevant article and trust that the community there will include it or not.

At AboutUs, we encourage some types of self promotion. On the AboutUs wiki page about your website/business/organization you can creatively do what you would like. Certainly you can go overboard, that doesn’t happen much, when it does, we go in and edit it back. This is the acceptable way to do self promotion at AboutUs.

The more complicated and deeper thought way, is to inter WikiLink your business/website/organization with related ones. We do that through a WikiLink – external links to websites other than the one you are on – are strongly discouraged – and usually fixed / reverted.

Hope this helps! Best, Mark

p.s. Here on the weblog, I have made all your external links to you site – internal links to the wiki page about your site.
