name derived from Afognak Island; published by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 23), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "Z(aliv) Afognak," or "Afognak Bay." The Russian name "Litnik" was reported in 1900 by Lieutenant Commander J. F. Moser, U.S. Navy (USN).
