name published by Captain Lutke (1836, p. 289, 304, 305), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "Le detroit Akoutanskoi." Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), published the name as "P(roliv) Akutanskiy," meaning "Akutan Strait." may possibly be the same as "Paso de Sanganoac" recorded by Galiano (1802, map 3). may be from the Aleut word "hakuta," meaning "I made a mistake."
