AboutUs: Your PUBLIC enterprise wiki

by Tak Kendrick on 15 December 2008

Over the weekend, InformationWeek had a great article highlighting “Wikis That Work In The Real World.” The piece discussed how four different companies and organizations used internal and external-facing wikis as enterprise solutions for employees, customers and partners to collaborate and share information on anything from marketing ideas to case studies to company picnics.

This isn’t a surprise to us, since we’ve been advocating for years that wiki is a great opportunity for a company to share and collaborate. For companies without dedicated IT support or technology resources, a public wiki like AboutUs is a great place to start such a project; we handle the back-end work so your company and it’s clients can get to the most important aspect of having an wiki – creating and sharing content.

As it happens, entrepreneur Verne Harnish just last week blogged on GulfNews.com about using AboutUs.org to build out the wiki on his executive training program, Gazelles:

My company recently launched a public wiki devoted to collecting examples of quarterly themes. Within a few days of announcing the website, many of our long standing clients took the time to populate the wiki with past quarterly theme ideas, photos, and detailed write-ups. This, in turn, is now a valuable resource to the rest of our clients which strengthens our market position as a source of tools and ideas for helping executives grow their businesses.

We decided to house our wiki on a large public site called AboutUs.org.

Beyond Gazelles, AboutUs.org features a number of other enterprise wiki-portals, including the 12House.com area which features information not just on the 12House.com family of websites (like 12Listen.com and 12Angel.com among others) and their staff of experts, but is also being used as a forward-facing opportunity for 12House customers to leave feedback via our “InfluenceUs” tool – right on the corresponding article pages.

Creating and sharing content for your company in a collaborative fashion can be daunting at times, but we believe that the future of business follows a Web 2.0 model of collaboration, transparency and working in public. It’s exciting to read the InformationWeek article and see what those companies are doing with wiki technology as well as what’s being built on our site too.
